Anne Hutchinson And Her Theology Theory

Anne Hutchinson threatened the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Because of her theology, Anne Hutchinson was a Puritan. She fought for religious rights in America. She and her husband Will Hutchinson moved along with twelve of their children to America during the migration from England. John Winthrop became Governor and she fought to protect her religious rights. Hutchinson came into the colony to mock Governor John Winthrop’s religious and civil laws. He also got people to follow his ministry, including women.

This Puritan-run community was founded in Massachusetts by John Winthrop. He brought about 14,000 people, all Puritan and Christian, from England to Massachusetts. Winthrop brings together all the people and makes them believe that their Christianity connects them. They are able to listen to and follow him together. He is almost like their connection and safe afterlife. He makes it so that Christians are always connected to one another as long as they’re Christian. Winthrop wanted both religious and civil law to govern the colony. He was concerned that the Church of England didn’t practice the law of the gospel preached, and wanted Massachusetts to clarify this. The Puritan task is to live a life that is consistent with the gospel of Massachusetts Bay Colony. These people are a Covenant. It is a Covenant of Grace. If they are forgiven, then they will have a life outside of death. This is the practice Winthrop shares with his people. Anne Hutchinson, who is threatening Winthrop’s Puritan Massachusetts Bay Colony with his anti-Christian practice, then comes in.

Anne Hutchinson’s theology made fun of Winthrop ministers. According to Governor Winthrop she claimed “they weren’t able ministers of New Testament,”2 adding that they had discussed the Covenant or Work rather than the Covenant of Grace. Winthrop’s ministry was made to look poor, and it looked like he wasn’t following his plan. Winthrop swiftly took action and put her under house detention to end the threat. She was a major threat as people started following her lead and listening to her sermons. This makes Winthrop seem fake and can stop the government he’s trying to create.

Trail was unfair for Hutchinson. Hutchinson reacted immediately to the fact that she had “troubled both the peace and the churches”2 at Massachusetts Bay Colony. Hutchinson’s doctrine was not shared by any other person at the trial, which was necessary to eliminate the threat of Puritan rule. She was accused of disrupting the piece by voicing her opinion. Six ministers were also raised to state that she was preaching Covenant of Works rather than Covenant of Graces. Hutchinson was defeated in this battle. Anne Hutchinson, after many trials, was finally expelled from Massachusetts Bay Colony.

Anne Hutchinson was viewed as a threat by the Puritans. She made fun at the ministers and encouraged others to follow her example. She was very dangerous for Winthrop’s life and Massachusetts. He knew she was dangerous, but it doesn’t mean she wasn’t right. Although she was dangerous for the Massachusetts Bay Colony, her theology may have been correct.
