Suspect In Jack The Ripper Case: A Look At The Character Francis Tumblety

The notorious murderer known as Jack the Ripper.

Jack the Ripper is a serial killer thought to have committed 5 murders at Whitechapel, a small area in London. The murders of all five victims were executed by cutting their throats. They were all committed by female prostitutes who lived in Whitechapel. Francis Tumblety was one of the suspects. He is a well-known doctor who lived in Liverpool at the time.

Francis Tumblety fulfilled the same criteria as the rest of the suspects. Because of the strength needed to cut through someone’s throat and Mary Kelly inviting him to her room, it seems almost certain that Jack the Ripper is a man between the ages (20-60). The suspect must also have had access the knife with specific characteristics. These knives were only available to certain trades in Whitechapel 1888. Jack the Ripper took the victim’s uterus, and sometimes other organs in all the murders except the Mary Ann Nichols crime. Jack the Ripper was able to locate the uterus of the victim and remove it from Whitechapel (History’s Mysteries, 1994). The reason the police were unable to determine who was responsible for the crime was that the killer was able quickly disappear from the scene. This proved that he was well-versed in the area. Jack the Ripper took the victim’s organs, cut their throats and robbed them of their reproductive systems. Mary Ann Nichols was repeatedly attacked in the abdomen. Mary Kelly was also slit in half. This anger is likely to be rooted in a hatred of prostitutes or women. Whitechapel was the catalyst for a media frenzy. Prostitutes around the area were scared by this and took precautions to avoid any suspicious looking men. It is therefore unlikely Jack the Ripper suffered from any psychological disturbances or damage.

Francis Tumblety (55-year-old American physician who moved to London in June 1888) was suspected of being Jack the Ripper. Tumblety was a doctor and would have the knowledge and tools to take out the uterus. Tumblety’s uteri were also unusually disturbing. Colonel Dunham claims that Francis Tumblety attended a dinner at Tumblety’s. He “placed on the tables a dozen or more containers containing, as they said, thematrices (uteri), of every class (csicop.org): Jack the Rifle). Tumblety was also convicted of “attempting” to end the pregnancy of a local prostitute, selling her dangerous pills.

Tumblety’s hatred of women was evident from his animosity towards his ex-wife, who had been unfaithful in their marriage. Mary Kelly was the only victim, and all other victims were 43-47 year old prostitutes. This could not be coincidence, as Tumblety’s wife was “rather senior” (casebook by Jack the Ripper). Tumblety may have targeted older prostitutes to exact revenge on his wife. Mary Nichols’ death was likely a break-in in a pattern due to the increased risk of being arrested on the streets.

Tumblety, who was being held for gross indecency, was released on November 7. He would have been released on November 7 for gross indecency but was not imprisoned. On November 9, he was arrested again as a suspect in the Ripper murders. Tumblety fled America immediately after being released from bail. This is a plausible explanation for why the killings ended.

Due to a lack of sufficient evidence, Jack the Ripper’s case cannot be tied to one individual. It’s difficult to find Jack the Ripper-type suspects. Francis Tumblety is a possible suspect in the crimes. This means that he may have been the serial killer behind the Whitechapel murders.
